Freq Nasty: Fabriclive 42
By Martyn Pepperell
Essentially relentlessly pounding, mid-tempo club music, Fabriclive 42 by NZ-raised UK breakbeat legend Freq Nasty is a mix CD, as opposed to an album of original production. This means most of the music here was made by other dance producers including Tayo, Radioclit, TRG, Buraka Som Sistema and Cadence Weapon. Not the sort of man to completely cut himself out of the picture however, Freq has included six of his own original productions, remixes and collaborations; which stand comfortably alongside the rest of the included works. For this mix, Freq's theme was to select a cross genre blend of stonking "balls to the wall music" as he describes it, material drawn from different mid-tempo ethnic music movements like Baltimore Club, Dubstep, Kuduro, 4x4 Bassline House and of course traditional English breakbeat. So yeah, if you're looking for a well-mixed, well-selected, well-engineered and well-mastered mixture of bleeps, bass, breaks, cartoonish vocal samples and general post neo rave tomfoolery, Fabriclive42 is the one.
