Bigwater: Bigwater

By Rhys Morgan
This is a solid rock/blues release from a Wainui/Gisborne trio who have gone from playing covers and jamming in their guitarist's lounge, to writing, recording and producing their own material and nailing the local scene. Bigwater is Trevor Herk (bass and engineering) Pete Stewart (guitar) and Lincoln Wright (drums and BVs.) Their 11-track debut is packed full of big rocking numbers that are easy to compare with the likes of modern Neil Young and early Fleetwood Mac, whilst projecting the slightest hint of '90s grunge. Some of the instrumental moments would make perfect surfing soundtracks which is hardly surprising as the band resides near one of our best surf spots. I Wake and I Wonder is a highlight of the album backed up with the bright sounding Some People and New Future, a stellar tune that must make for a rip-shit-and-bust live performance with its lead break and catchy chorus. Well-placed backing vocals courtesy of the drummer give depth to Bigwater's songs and there's possibly room for them to enlist in some extra percussive elements and maybe even a pair of backup vocalists to boost their sound more so. Still, an inspiring example of what smaller-town bands can produce completely by themselves.
