Chanelle Davis: Since Yesterday
By Amanda Mills
Chanelle Davis has been keeping busy since her debut 'Better Than Alone' was released last year. Between touring the country and performing numerous shows, she has written and recorded this second album. While not showing a huge change in direction, 'Since Yesterday' does point to a new approach - more polished and professional, with markedly improved vocal work. She has been compared to Norah Jones in musical style but I find Davis' material more engaging, with emotive lyrics and melodies that attract the ears and weave their way around the accompaniment. Andy in particular uncovers a new side to her writing style, a rock-based song with a simple piano hook and a chorus that stays in the mind, while A.M.A.N.D.A. plays with rag-time jaunty rhythms. Also included is Dear Jon, Davis' award winning song for the NZ Songwriters Trust that brought her attention. Credit must go to her band as well as the team behind, including co-producer Kovi Mongelli and Ryan Smith who mastered the album at Sterling Sound. With plenty of radio-friendly material this is a good step forward for Chanelle Davis.
