Sharkweek: Egyptian Lions
By Ania Glowacz
You cannot judge a CD by its cover - well certainly not this one. This one may have slipped under your radar. The second release from Dunedin's Sharkweek (following 'The Hammerhead Nebula' in 2006), is filled with dreamy, engaging, purposeful, stimulating, intriguing, sample-filled electronica which combine to massage your synapses and slowly explode your brain. This is a real journey at maximum CD length - a long, twisted ride. It's been a while since samples (dialogue, movie snippets, sound effects etc.) have been used so solidly and creatively. It's also been a while since the era of The Orb, Ozric Tentacles and the like, and it's good to have something of our own now in the Banco De Gaia and Boards Of Canada vein. Sharkweek is the creativity of Peter Lewis and is done well. Love the Commando Weekly cover artwork rip off. An update on the trance/ambient scene that we've had before, but this is now. It's stimulating of the imagination - beware of mixing with other substances!
