Optimus Gryme: Annihilation of the Ego

By Andrew Hughes
Charlie B, aka Optimus Gryme, is a well known and experienced figure in Auckland's drum 'n bass and dubstep scene, and the evidence of his hard working career is frankly obvious on this solid dubstep four-track EP. 'Annihilation of the Ego' starts with the title track, which blends phasers and (as expected) much reverb and delay to create a dark atmosphere, which is upheld throughout the EP. Heavy kicks and basslines are delivered in thunderous fashion on While You Were Sleeping, a stomping paranoid beat encompassing haunting build-ups, makes room for unavoidable head nods with a dash of adrenaline. Local MC Billy Fluid lends a hand on A Billy. The beat combined with his rapid-fire wordplay make for the EP's highlight. In all, this debut and pre-album release showcases a strong engineering standard and will undoubtedly be popular amongst local dubstep fans. If you're a fan of tech-style electro you should definitely check this out.
