Pink Champagne: Stick To Yer Guns
By Del Thomas
This is the latest recording from English ex-pat duo, Cheryl and Steve O'Connor, and finds them in a bluesy 'back porch' mood playing some classic blues as well as three original songs in a similar style. Recorded at Killermoa studio in Waitara, this is a real home-grown affair with all guitars played by Steve and Cheryl covering all the vocals. Although the arrangements are, on first listen, relatively straightforward, there are a number of guitars used including a Gibson L50 and Dobro and I really like the slightly boxy, old fashioned guitar tones here which complement Cheryl's vocal harmony arrangements. You Can Get A Steak At Home - one of their originals - is a standout, with its sassy lyrics that Bessy Smith or Etta James could have tackled and turned into a real sleazy number. This seven-track CD has a very comfortable feel to it. There's nothing strained or too energetic about it - very much a lazy Sunday afternoon album. My complaint is that it's not long enough. Another three or four tracks would have rounded off the album nicely and would have saved me having to hit the repeat button quite so soon. Definitely worth a bluesy listen.
