T.C. Wedde: Bronze
By Amanda Mills
Conrad Wedde is better known for playing the keyboards and guitars in The Phoenix Foundation, and for having co-written the music for 'Eagle vs Shark'. 'Bronze' is his first solo album, and is fully instrumental, with the exception of backing vocals by Sophie Burbery, and spoken word by DJ Tasker on the majestic, string-laden Distant Star. I find instrumental albums can become background ambience very easily, but 'Bronze' has a lot to help it stand out: Milestone is a New Romantic-esque synth-pop gem, and Out of Date has a lovely melody that weaves its way around the beguiling waltz rhythm. While the majority of the album is electronic-based, there are tracks that step into other genres; Maliboo has a mellow beat and an acoustic guitar motif that grounds the song in a more classic-pop vein, while Pelorus Sound is almost baroque in the intricate arrangements. 'Bronze' was self-produced and (mostly) self-written, with mastering help from Lee Prebble, and instrumental assistance from Phoenix members Luke Buda and Will Ricketts. While not entirely different to the tone of his work with The Phoenix Foundation this is a lovely curiosity and should gain Wedde his own audience.
