Jonny Love: Jonny Love

By Amanda Mills
Jonny Love moved here from England in 2004. After setting up his own label Limelight Records in Dunedin (with himself as the sole artist), he moved to Auckland in 2006. Love's new friends included members of local bands, and the support helped him to write his debut album, which was recorded last year at York St Studios, with UK producer Greg Haver (Manic St. Preachers, Opshop). 'Jonny Love' is full of acoustic indie pop songs, which Love sings in a pleasant enough voice. Single Not the First (Not the Last) is one of those songs that can pass over you on first listen, but the chiming riff and the vocal melody in the chorus subsequrntly manage to worm their way into the subconscious. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for most of the remainder of this album. While the melodies are pretty, the songs become background music, with little to differentiate between their beats and textures. Love could do with more tracks like Turn Life Around and My Sympathy, with their rolling melodies and intricate backgrounds. A lot of professional work has clearly gone into this debut album, but still it never really captured me.
