Siren Junkies: Fascinate

By Simon Sweetman
This stylishly packaged CD is the first full length album from an Auckland four-piece who have played with some of the big guns of NZ music (Breaks Co-Op, Anika Moa, Good Shirt, Goldenhorse) and at Canada's NXNE festival in 2006. So they've been out and about with their moody pop/rock and have clearly put effort into this release. Despite that though the band here feels like it is yet to really grab its own voice. I imagined Renee from Tadpole as she sang with a four-piece band and no DJ. And I imagined Fur Patrol without the crunch in the riffs. This isn't a bad thing necessarily; just I cannot imagine Siren Junkies being elevated on the strength of this album. There are some really competent ideas, most of Amos Clarke's songs are well structured and actually contain hooks, but it underwhelms all round. They just might delight with a second offering.
