The Nomad: Selected Works
By Talia Blewitt
'Selected Works' is just that, part best-of, part remixes and part new tracks from Daimon Schwalger, one of our more liberally talented producers. The Nomad is a fitting alias for him to go by as, particularly on this bringing together of several albums, Schwalger flits between many musical genres. If you dig breaks, drum'n'bass, hip hop/rap, dub/reggae with an electronic touch to all, then you most definitely will find a track to appease your musical craving. The Nomad has roped in several Kiwi music heavyweights as features, including Lisa Tomlins, King Kapisi and MC Kyla on vocals while fresh talent Agent Alvin does a spot of remixing, and Oakley (O.G.) Grenell works his magic on guitar and keys. The album wastes no time getting started with Breaking Rocks; what starts off as a funky wee dub number, soon speeds up into a floor-stomper with some dirty synth. Take a Sip is trippy as hell, and Destinations and Life Forms are all about heading to a happy place. Self-produced, mixed and mastered at Schwalger's own Fresh Audio base in Wellington, this is a quality international calling card (Schwalger's sights are set on Australia where he has just moved, and Japan), and a worthy addition to any breaks/dub collection.
