Mr Sicc and J-Dubb: Old Skool Machete Funk
By Andrew Hughes
I haven't heard any decent gangster rap music for what seems like a very long time, fortunately Mr Sicc and J-Dubb have delivered in this instalment. This 'mixtape' does everything it's supposed to, the quality of beats and rhymes are above average, and just as importantly, the lyrical content is provocative and offensive. "Bitch you movin up? I kick your kids in the mouth, send some Lebanese to come and blow up your house, I a violent mother f#@!a full of rage and hate", really it doesn't get much more gangsta than this. Typically the themes draw on sex, violence, drug abuse and criminal activity for inspiration for the majority of the album. The beats which sample classic funk tracks like Zapp and Rogers' Computer Love are arranged cleanly and cohesively by Daryl Mathew and add a nostalgic element to the project. A solid introduction for J-Dubb, this mix further illustrates the breadth and abundance of hip hop talent in South Auckland.
