Soulsaxplus: Reach Out

By Stuart Page
This is the third album from Paul Lee and Jani Dennis since 1993. Having seen the duo live in Pahia I can attest to the fact that this a completed unadorned recording of what you would hear from them in a café or bar. Paul has a big warm sound on tenor and soprano saxophones and both Paul and Jani contribute ably to the vocals. The album is kind of jazz meets new age, with lyrics that focus heavily on peace and harmony. "Find your peace listen inside you/Through the sound of the surf." This kind of lyric might appeal to people who like the atmospheric backdrops of Medwyn Goodall for example, though Paul's obvious love of jazz gives 'Reach Out' a slightly different slant. Production-wise I'm not that keen on some of the MIDI drum tracks and there are a few tightness problems, but this is a live documentation after all. Lyrically this album will also be criticised by some as being a little naïve and maybe this is a fair comment; however, it's hard to dismiss these guys after seeing their commitment live. I think this album will therefore have its place in the 'punters at gigs' market. Also available via www.soulsaxplus.co.nz
