Side Kick Nick: Miscellaneous Adventures
By Shaun Chait
This is the perfect Sunday fun album. At times pretty, modern, bent, clever, and arty, the tracks on here check a myriad of musical reference points from Damon Albarn past Flaming Lips to a wide range of NZ alt/indie bands. However there is more here, an intelligence and uniqueness that makes the listening experience thoroughly enjoyable. Making it more impressive is that Side Kick Nick is essentially a one man band, a tal;ented Aucklander by the name of Nick Buckton, who has drawn a few friends in on various occasions, producing and mixing the album himself as well. Mastering was handled by Murray Fisher (Voom, ex-Goodshirt and now in the Side Kick Nick live band). Hello My Friend is a folk song with an indie personality disorder, and Coffee House Chronicles is also a slow, dreamy indie folk number. Sonic Sunday is a mid-fi rocker and The Phone Song has been a bNet favourite. Apparently 10 years in the making, and recorded in various Auckland locations and this album sounds remarkably fresh.
