Taisha: Aonua
By Melody Thomas
You know that ad where a couple is speaking to each other in Spanish, looking all hot and steamy - only it transpires they're talking about exhausts and carburettors - the point being that some things just sound better in another language? 'Aonua' is a perfect example of this. Actually, for an album named in Te Reo Maori, with every song titled in Te Reo Maori - there is very little in the way of waiata on this album. When it occurs, I really like it. But then it disappears again under Taisha's voice (which is admittedly lovely) and musical production that makes me feel like I'm inside Disney's Pocahontas (not aided by the odd break for poetic whispering). Perhaps this album really just isn't my thing. If you like a) Celine Dion b) waiata and c) your grandchildren, you're likely to really enjoy this album.
