False Start: Through The Looking Glass
By Shaun Chait
From the moment you cast eyes on 'Through The Looking Glass', it's apparent what you're getting into. I like that in a band - cover artwork should always be a selling point in itself. Everything about this CD screams pop punk/emo rock, and that's before taking a listen. The only question then becomes is it any good? Judging by the legion of fans these guys have, the answer seems to be yes. And if Simple Plan/My Chemical Romance are your tonic, False Start may soon be your new fave. I Come From A Place and Home Is A Heartbeat Away are solid metal rock numbers. Put Your Hands Up showcases a pop-punk sound reminiscent of Fall Out Boy or Good Charlotte. Four Letter Lie curiously sounds like a Def Leppard ballad given the treatment, Memories references The Bleeders (incidentally False Start are signed to frontman Angelo's Deadboy Records), while Never Let You Down incorporates a Lit riff. The use of metal-esque vocal growls is almost a nod towards Blindspott. By and large then a bit generic, but a clean, crisp production from the band with James Wong (who also mixed and engineered) helps to keep it together.
