Jeff Abbott: Saturn Return
By Ben Mortensen
It's hard to define this album in regards to its sound. It's really a unique mishmash of various music genres from the good time '70s rock 'n' roll opening track Just Like John Fogerty, to the up-beat, bluesy story telling of Ballad of the Roseneath Housewife on through the roots/reggaeish Level Ground to the airy Battlestar Galactica-like track My Saturn Return (which seems to give that slow and floaty feeling that I imagine you get in zero gravity). 'Saturn Return' is the second album from this Wellingtonian multi-instrumentalist, Abbott plays an array of instruments including guitar, bass, sitar, and harmonica, while also employing Doro Wagner to play "didjereedo". He also includes several quirky and interesting dialogues, which add a sense of fun and humour to the whole thing. The programming, recording, mixing and mastering is done by Abbott as well. The diversity of this album may detract on its appeal for some, but I really loved the mixed bag of musical treats that it brought.
