Matthew Amoore: Flown Away
By Simon Sweetman
This reminds me a lot of the album 'The Friends Of Rachel Worth' by The Go-Betweens. The Aussie band's first 'comeback' album that had a gentle ease to it that almost automatically underrated the album; made it seem too easy, but after several spins the deceptive songs really started to strike the chord, really came alive. 'Flown Away' has been like that for me too, there's also a vocal resemblance to some of the Go-Betweens' sound on a couple of the tracks. Matthew Amoore has written and recorded the eight songs of this debut album in true DIY fashion, contributing guitars, vocals, keyboards, organs, bass with Ryan Neville adding some drum sequencing. It has a beachy laziness to it, dreamy and evocative; easy to slip on and just fade away to. Nice music that is not challenging and difficult, but not deserving to be mocked for that fact. There's a warmth and depth that becomes apparent after a few spins.
