Jane Siene: LoveDeathSexRoad
By Renee Jones
Don't let the singer/songwriter description lead you into any preconceptions regarding what Jane Siene might sound like - it's such a broad category but she is definitely her own woman. Siene's second album 'LoveDeathSexRoad' demonstrates her powerful vocals and strident rock sensibilities - I would expect her live shows to be quite an experience. Her busking talents brought her to the attention of Tim Finn, who asked her to open for him on his 'Imaginary Kingdom' tour last year. 'LoveDeathSexRoad' was recorded at Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios, where it was produced by another ex-Enz bandsman Eddie Rayner. Siene has a gutsy, confident delivery not commonly found in local releases; she cites Patti Smith, Annie Lennox and Melissa Etheridge as influences and it is clear that she shares a certain no-nonsense attitude with these women. The album's title is a pretty good summary of the songs' subject matter; they are gritty but mostly fun tales of love and life and finding one's place in the world. 'LoveDeathSexRoad' is a strong album in terms of both sound and content, and if that intrigues then it certainly warrants your purchase. Distributed by Ode Records.
