The Windy City Strugglers: Shine On

By Tony Parker
Long a Wellington institution (their 40th anniversary looms) the legendary Strugglers have consistently followed the folk/blues direction that inspired them to form all those years ago. Their success is built on the songwriting partnership of singer/guitarist Bill Lake and Arthur Baysting along with the majestic and soulful voice of Rick Bryant and 'Shine On' brings all of that and more. Soul, bluegrass and swing influences also appear on what is mainly an acoustic outing with mainstay Andrew Delahunty and new member Steve Jessup providing all manner of appropriate stringed accompaniment while the ever present Nick Bollinger holds down the bass and production duties. It's a sound that retains an authentic and somewhat organic feel, obviously the result of many years playing together combined with a love of acoustic folk and blues. Song-wise there are a couple of lightweight lyrical efforts (Tintin's In Love, Come On June) but when Bryant kicks in with the gruff blues/soul of Unlikely Friends and Bluer Than You'll Ever Be it quickly makes you remember just how good the Windy City Strugglers are.
