Ethical: Ages Turn
By Andrew Hughes
A backbone artist in both the Move The Crowd and Breakin Wreckwordz camps, Ethical's debut is impressive. Personally I'm absolutely sick of people sleeping on thorough local hip hop releases such as this one. With huge joints like On My Throne, Talk Of The Town, 3rd Class Living and Problem Child it's worth checking out Ethical's debut if only to acknowledge the high standard of hip hop music that NZ is now releasing. Ethical has his own distinctive style which incorporates heartfelt lyrics with topical concepts like on Afterlife where he asks "Did I leave my mark on this world?" Rapper Now is another standout track illustrating Ethical's transition from fan to rapper, its addictive hook and minimal beat are effective and contemporary. The guest appearances are also impressive with American artists Grandmaster Roc Raider, M1 of Dead Prez and beat makers Cochise and Emile who handled the majority of 'Ages Turn' production duties. An album with a wide range of content, Ethical's creativity and diversity has followed through to make a strong debut album. Not only will it get the party started, it should also make you think whilst being entertained.
