Bruce Conlon: Audience Of One

By Shaun Chait
Bruce Conlon, who used to front popular rock band Eight, is now pursuing a solo career with the release of this very good first album. Conlon has shunned the sonic rock of his previous band for a sound you don't often hear from these shores, sitting somewhere between Josh Rouse and John Mayer. He's clearly been inspired more by the English scene he's now part of than stuff coming out of this country. It's a bit of a brooding, reflective work, with a pretty big sound (the 'band' playing on this record includes Paul Russell). I also like the album artwork, which perfectly reflects the music it contains. Recorded at York Street and also some in the UK (where he is now based), Conlon and Nic Manders have done a nice job on production along with Sam Gibson's valuable input. Mastering was done at Sterling Sound in New York. Of a pretty decent set of songs, line honours go to the title track, Hanging on Every Word, It's For You (which sounds like Coldplay mucking around with Lennon's Imagine), and Long Lost Friend. All very sincere - whether beautifully so or sickly so depends on your level of cynicism.
