The Baddies Are Coming: El Schlong
By Alistair Wickens
I'm no stranger to the weird and wonderful warblings of El Schlong having seen them play a number of times in some of Wellington's darker and dirtier bars. Despite my enjoyment of their enlivening live performances I'd never given thought to when and if they might release a full length recording - possibly because I couldn't imagine how they'd possibly translate what they do on stage into the studio. Apparently someone had been giving it some thought and the resulting album is a wonder to behold. Full of interesting tangents and serious messages hidden in layers of poetry (stop me if I'm reading to much into it...), I'd almost go so far as to label it whimsical. But that would be ignoring the heavy metal attitude behind it all, an attitude that really is difficult to ignore when it's so in your face. This would have to be one of the most fun albums I've heard all year, packaged in some great cover art. Get into it.
