Anna Coddington: The Lake
By Melody Thomas
Every review I've read of this has said the same thing - Anna sounds like (her ex-flatmate) Anika Moa, but not as good.Or similarly she is like Bic Runga, just not as good. Comparison to these two great, and by now very experienced local artists may well be inevitable and when I first ran through this album I was almost ready to agree. And then I listened again. And again. Like Anika's current album(funnily enough) it grew on me hugely. It's true, these are like Anika's songs. They're simple, they're catchy and they're really, really sweet. And the more I listen to them the more I enjoy them. This is an album to put your make up on to, to head off on a girly roadtrip with, to cry with over a bottle wine. The boys probably won't get it but then when do they ever get what we're really trying to say to them? And in the meantime we get Anna all to ourselves… Beautifully recorded at Roundhead with a bunch of stellar musicians, this debut album readily holds its own next to those other female heavyweights.
