Mike Rigg: Living For Now
By Tony Parker
Wairarapa-based Mike Rigg is a musician who has, through a string of coincidental events, hooked up with Carterton studio owner and local legend John Mabey. Together with drummer Darren Knight the pair have combined to produce an album of original material where most of the instrumental and vocal duties are taken by Rigg. A quick flick through Rigg’s Bebo site reveals a passion for classic and hard rock, something fairly evident on this album with a typical Rigg song featuring electric and acoustic guitars to the fore, solid bass and drums, anthemic choruses and more often than not a guitar solo somewhere. Rigg certainly has the voice for it and his musical skills cannot be doubted but there’s a lack of variety in the arrangements along with an air of predictability about proceedings, and this combined with some thin production values rarely raises ‘Living For Now’ above the ordinary.
