Grand Prix: Racing Lines
By Liz Barry
According to Wellington alt-country band Grand Prix, formula one racing is the perfect metaphor for life. And that theme pervades the senses from the moment you put on 'Racing Lines' and take an emotional journey through the thrills and spills of the human condition. There are three Grand Prix members – singer Dunlop Firestone, Vegas [the female of the group] and Flash, who has played in the genre around the country with his brother and recorded in Phoenix, Arizona. In keeping with the race theme, the band perform their twangy and dark country rock wearing racing suits. Songs of hooning and driving spill out over edgy, twangy guitar with some country harmonies that could be straight out of Texas. There is a sense of frayed nerves, pent up energy and a dark and brooding force that might spin out of control as we circle the endless track of life. Grand Prix have been together about a year and a half, playing regularly at Bar Bodega, and have received airplay on Wellington's Active89fm. Hope they do a few laps in a town near you.
