Marystaple: No Need To Be Nervous
By Simon Sweetman
Marystaple’s debut full-album was a long time coming and has suffered somewhat in that the band (originally a quartet) is now a trio. And there have been a few stylistic shifts. It’s still, essentially, indie guitar/alt-rock music. And there is some good stuff here for sure, but I think the excitement of finally releasing a full album (with two EPs in the can) has meant that these guys have tossed their paint at the canvas, stroking it liberally rather than confining themselves to a nice tidy corner and keeping the colours unified. That is not to say that repeated listens won’t reward, I already like it a lot more than I did at first, and there’s no faulting the actual playing. It’s just that certain tracks are really good, which makes others feel a tad underwhelming. Marystaple were always a good live show back when I saw them, and I’m sure they still have that intensity.
