Darren Watson: King Size

By St. Lucy
In case you don't know Darren's work, he's the guy from Chicago Smokeshop of old. For some reason I had Smokeshop pegged as a Christchurch band, but it turns out they were from Wellington all along. In step with most local blues releases there's a hefty assortment of covers on here with some tasty original material comfortably nestled in amongst it all. I perhaps would have liked the covers to originals ratio tilted more in favour of Darren's own stuff though. 'Not a sample or a drum loop to be found,' the press release boldly claims, and good on 'em I say! All star local blues heroes grace the recordings and the results speak for themselves. Darren may well be NZ's answer to John Poppa, but statements like; 'possibly the best blues album recorded in NZ to date', might be taking things a wee bit to far eh Darren? Out through Beluga Records and available online via www.darrenwatson.com.
