Wayne Mason And The Fallen Angels: Sense Got Out
By Tony Parker
Wayne Mason’s legacy over four decades of music making has been his unstinting devotion to the craft of songwriting. From The Formyula and Rockinghorse through to the Warratahs and his later solo work, Mason has always focused on crafting songs with a melodic appeal that explore matters of the heart, and the material here on his third solo album is no exception. Recorded with his road band The Fallen Angels, which includes long-time bassist Clint Brown, drummer Richard Te One and guitarist Greg Turner, Mason follows a musical path that is acoustic-based and often references the pop, rock and country sounds of his previous bands. What sets ‘Sense Got Out’ apart from his previous albums though is the sense of darkness and despair in lyrics that portray the raw emotion of relationships gone wrong. Even the warmth of the delivery can’t hide the pain and heartbreak contained within. It’s an uneasy listen at times but serves to highlight once again the songwriting treasure that is Wayne Mason.
