Bulletproof: Dark Times/Desperate Measures
By Jacob Connor
Despite lyrics involving blood, oil and war, ‘Dark Times/Desperate Measures’ is less a political treatise than a stereo-friendly spleen vent. Bulletproof’s chaotic vision will likely hasten the coming of the apocalypse rather than divert it. There’s a satisfying thump accompanying a general sense of unease in these tracks. The antidote for 21st century blues? Get demented on the dancefloor. Mastered by Concord Dawn’s Evan Short and released on Concord’s Uprising imprint, ‘DT/DM’ sniffs the air of 2008 and smells pollution, corruption and decay. Wreckage warns; ‘we’ve come to wreck your head”, but it’s an agreeable form of brain damage. Drum ‘n’ bass has had some sturdy representation recently from The Upbeats and State of Mind and this release keeps the flag aloft. Sure, you might say complex issues are reduced to cool-sounding sound bites - but most of the talking is done in the instrumentation. Snake Charmer is transporting, venomous and groovitational all at once. Syria is similarly exotic. Line of Sight boasts an irresistible lurching bassline. If you’re into heavily syncopated percussion and synth basslines, this is some good shit.
