Flowz: In the Heart of the City (Fiso Siloata/Rhythmethod)
By Martyn Pepperell
Flowz has got this thing going on that hip hop calls a regional sound - his lyrics, vocal performance and beat production are all delivered with an aesthetic reflective of his upbringing, history and general life as a citizen of Wellington city. I can picture a lot of people unfairly misjudging Flowz and his music because of the current bias against local hip hop. This would be a shame, because as an MC he makes some witty, articulate and humorously honest observations on this strange thing we call life. The recording is likewise none too shabby. Chong Nee and DJ Raw handled most of the production of ‘In the Heart of the City’ giving the music a strong east coast ‘90s piano-heavy flavour. Got My Eye On You features Fat Freddys Drop flash guy Dallas and should get radio play. Personally though, I was all about History in the Making, Flowz’ chorus-free summary of the history of hip hop in Aotearoa.
