The first release from this relatively new Hawkes Bay band is far from groundbreaking yet provides an easy and refreshing listen. With all five members taking the pseudonym last name ‘night’, it is lead singers Ben and Jess that really carry the album through. Their soaring voices work well in harmony together, with well-placed funk/ska trumpet interludes adding to each track. All That You’ve Known and Blue Moon Horizon are excellent tunes, but the highlight is the uplifting seven-and-a-half minute finale Whatever You Do, providing an excellent idea of how a Blvd Nights live show would feel. Unfortunately the black and white photo montage cover is hardly striking, more cheap and clumsy, which doesn’t reflect the talent inside. This debut is not a must hear, but you won’t regret it if you do. Related Information
