Backyard Burial/Malevolence: Grinding Aotearoa
By Alistair Wickens
Here’s the premise: take two of the longest established and most respected grindcore bands in the country, give them five tracks each (including one live cut from both recorded at Wellington’s Valve Bar) to unleash their metal assault on the listeners of Aotearoa. Both bands have been doing this long enough to be able to deliver polished blasts of metal on demand. Backyard Burial cover their usual subject matter with the humour they’re known for. You’re Not Getting Your Hand Back, about our most notorious P smoker, is a classic. Malevolence have a slightly less grinding sound but don’t let the album down. Clones (We’re All) would have to be the standout on their half of the CD. This album offers a chance to check out two of New Zealand’s metal legends in one handy package. If you’re a fan of the genre you’d be a chump to not check this out.
