Delaney Davidson & The Alpine Cretins: Pitch-Inst.-Master-Key-Chrom.
By Simon Sweetman
This release from Delaney Davidson (ex-Dead Brothers) is a country/folk record filled with subversive sounds. It’s an immediate winner, as many from Christchurch’s She’ll Be Right label are, and I hope it finds a decent-sized audience. Sadly that step does seem to be the problem for this label’s acts. Lo-fi and rickety and lovely, Delaney Davidson & The Alpine Cretins combine tape-hiss with banjo, catchy pop tunes feature dark and loaded lyrics; the alt-country pervasiveness never feels phoned in or forced. I can hear the sound of Mark Olson & The Creekdippers and there are winsome duets akin to Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell’s work together (minus the dark boom of Lanegan’s voice obviously).Delaney has previously been a retro-rocker, into rockabilly, punk, pop and rock - a sort of antipodean Billy Childish. This album is class act. I look forward to many future listens.
