Roy Phillips: Dancing With Shadows
By Simon Sweetman
The Peddlers were a very famous British trio in the 1960s. Pianist leader Roy Phillips now lives north of Auckland and continues to make music. His voice (almost Joe Cocker-esque, channeling Blood, Sweat & Tears also) and piano playing is hard to fault but this album of very light jazz and soul is likely to be of appeal mostly to people who are aware of Phillips’ musical history. The cover of Last Train To Clarkesville confirms the nostalgic-for-the-baby-boomer-period feel of the record. And of course there’s nothing wrong with that - but I can’t see this album meaning very much to anyone born less than 30 years ago. Yes, I know music spans generations and eras, and you can like music from whatever period regardless of your age, but this is just far too comfortable. Produced by Billy kristian it’s uber-pleasant, polished and charming, but without any rough edges at all. Meaning, in a manner of speaking, that the album lacks an edge.
