The Alibis: On The Rocks
By Bruce Morley
“You should be able to play it, perform it, record it, release it - done!” said Midge Marsden. Which could be the Alibis’ motto, because that’s what they'‘e done here, spending a fast 20 hours in the studio to deliver a perfect postcard picture of their live performance of sometimes obscure neo-swing-rhythm-n-blues-goodtime-boogie. There have been a couple of personnel changes since the first album but the hard core of guitar/vocalist leader Wayne Baird, bassist/vocalist Phil Oxenham and keyboardist Stephen Clarke are still on board, while new drummer Mike Abbot sounds right at home. If there’s a slight sameness to the material, that’s alleviated by some feisty horn solos, and if you crank up the volume you’ll get the full impact that the band produces live while it’s going about its core business, playing for dancing. Having a good time is what it’s all about, and the Alibis never fail to spring the dancers loose with tunes like Jumpin’ From 6 To 6. Like grandfather’s axe (two new handles, one new head, but still the same axe) this band is still the same good ol’ instrument. Every town should have a band like this. www.alibisjumpswing.co.nz
