The Low Spark: Out in the Ozone
By Kat Cox
I wouldn’t kick the album off with the worst song I had to offer, but once over that hurdle there are tracks to look forward to from this ex-Dunedin band now based in Auckland. ‘Out in the Ozone’ is the debut album from The Low Spark and is not a bad effort from a band that is still relatively new. Their lyrical rock style seems to be trying for a cross between Nick Cave and The Cure. This comes across nicely on Can’t Help a Love - one of the best tracks on the album, and Perfect Love and Cinderella also work well in this vain. Natural accents are always something to be applauded - though Low Spark’s attempts to deliver this in an interesting way are far too over the top, and at times make Tom Healy appear tone deaf. The band’s layered instrumentals make up for the grey areas evoking a sense of loneliness and fervour. Admittedly my favourite track is the vocal-free Ozone.
