Jackie Bristow: Crazy Love
By Amanda Mills
New Zealand born singer-songwriter Bristow has been nomadic in her career, moving to Australia to record her first album, and then relocating to LA and a new label for this follow-up. This album was recorded and produced by Hekil Harar and Mark Howard with a host of international musicians assisting on the album, including long time supporter and guitarist of excellence Mark Punch. Bristow can surely sing, and has a very pure melodic voice that suits her material very well. While pop-oriented, the breezy melodies have a distinct country flavour, and catchy hooks to lure the listener in. The production is sophisticated and smooth, and it is obvious that a lot of care and attention has gone into the crafting of ‘Crazy Love’. Standout tracks include The World Is Turning, with its hypnotic bass groove underpinning the whole song, and bright, hook-filled chorus, Innocence, with the softer acoustic backing highlighting the delicate melody and vocals, and It’s Going To Be Alright which illustrates both the alluring qualities of Bristow’s voice and the slide guitar. Not my normal listening material of choice, ‘Crazy Love’ is a country-pop crossover record that creeps up on the listener, and persuades return visits.
