Various: Harmonica Masters Of New Zealand
By Simon Sweetman
If you do not like the harmonica then do not buy this album. Sure, that’s obvious, but, by the end of this album you will have heard a lot of mouth organ. A lot. The good news of course is that if you do like the harmonica - or are currently ambivalent - then this album should cheer you up and satiate. We have some great players - people like Brendon Power (who has made an international career on the back of his virtuoso capabilities) and legends like Midge Marsden and his compadres Tura “Bullfrog” Rata. Then there’s the (relative) new blood like Darcy Perry and Craig Bracken. Overall the album has a blues feel - though Power of course sticks to his Celtic roots. And it is a fantastic collection. But that caveat remains: you have to like the harmonica, I don’t think you would necessarily be swayed around just by the, erm, Power of this collection from Roots Music Aotearoa/Ode Records.
