Ted Brown: Shaky's Blessing

By Tony Parker
Ted Brown seems to have bounced around the fringes of NZ music for the past decade or so without having much to show for it, but an extended gig as Greg Johnson’s guitar player and time spent in California seems to have focused his talents. The result is ‘Shaky’s Blessing’, a country/folk gem with strong pop leanings that draws heavily on the Golden State singer/songwriter tradition. Recorded in his adopted home with Minibar’s Sid Jordan the album is full of melodic mid-tempo ruminations on
relationships viewed through a grown up lens, without sounding overwrought or insincere. The gentle strum of guitars and piano balladry compliment the richness of Brown’s vocals while Jordan’s multi instrumental prowess adds organ, xylophone and squeeze box to the mix. All this combines to make ‘Shaky’s Blessing’ an unassumingly fine album that should see his profile as a mature singer/songwriter grow.
