Batucada Sound Machine: Rhythm & Rhyme

By Martyn Pepperell
I have been tracking BSM’s progress for a couple of years now.
The live CD from Womad showed a lot of promise, and their sound tech Le Gaze has given me good insight into the actual progress BSM are making touring overseas. Here the band have delivered an original debut album of the variety we can compare to top shelf liquor. Although the band must be given a huge degree of credit for their fascinating Latin influenced groove and rhythm-driven compositions, a good measure must also go to the international production, mixing and mastering team of Neil Sparkes, Lawrence Manchester and Fred Kevorkian. To give a recording of a 13-piece band the level of clarity and punch required for the listener to truly appreciate the intricate details of the music, is no easy feat. Traditional Latin and Brazilian musical motifs are juxtaposed with our own variety of dub’n’bass/Aotearoan rap stylings and a hint of Jamiraquoi, all leading to a free-flowing sound syrup that makes aural sunshine on a cloudy day. BSM are here, and they brought Che Fu back with them. Track nine is a monster!
