The Moon Whispers: Dance Your Pain Away
By Ania Glowacz
Wow! First impressions and every listen thereafter. This is magical stuff indeed. The Moon Whispers is the alter-ego of Wellington
resident Elisa Di Napoli, and on occasion a duo or 4-piece band. Elisa’s voice is stunning and beautifully layered, and her songwriting and musical ideas are very appealing. Whilst you might be tempted to slot her into the ethereal, folky, ambient, gothic zone, on this release Elisa demonstrates broader talents with some great collaborations with varied composers
including Wellington’s Amy Davidson, Francis Heery (Ireland) and The Upbeats
(a brilliant Kosheen-style drum n’ bass track), as well as her own band. The production is excellent, particularly the bass and vocal treatments (shades of Dead Can Dance come to the fore). Ambient, trance and dance lovers will be entranced. Imagine a phatted-up Loreena McKennitt crossed with Jordan Reyne and you’re starting to get the picture. “Atmospheric” doesn’t even begin to describe the myriad of ambiences and emotions contained within this beautiful album. Not just entrancing, it’s also made for dancing. Title track is house-style and title says it all. Recorded at Matrix Studios in Wellington and sounding great.
