Dancefloor Guru: Dancefloor Guru
By Tom Anderson
The debut album from this Otago thee-piece blends energetic rock with reggae. The vocals are decidedly David Byrne-esque, but these guys are way too cool to be put in a copy box. They combine some funky reggae/ska/electronic beats, clever production effects with good vocal layering to produce some cool music. Simple guitar reggae beats dominate, but it’s the twist that the Gurus have put on these basic beats that set their music apart. It has dashes of Doors-type keyboards rehashed in ways that would spin even Ray Manzarek out. Moving to Mars and Pack Up Your Bags are stand outs, in fact it could almost be Morrisons’ music with the narrative poetry style vocals. You’d see these guys for the first time and swear you were somewhere you were really not supposed to be. This self-titled, self-released album from Nick Lucka, Regan Bennett and Tony McDermott is, at the very least, very interesting.
