Badtown: Rockers Run Riot
By Simon Sweetman
As a rule of thumb, the dub side of Aotearoa reggae tends to come from Wellington and Christchurch. Further north it’s more about the ska/punk side of reggae. So here we have Auckland’s Badtown, a band of punk rockers who have hooked up with horn section The Rockers to provide a high-energy album of ska and two-stepping punk layered with keys, trumpet and sax in and around the two-pronged bass and guitar attack. It works well; this is a strong album of tidy songs which was released in time to coincide with a national tour over the summer break. This debut is well worth checking out - enough touches of the lighter side of reggae/ska as well as the energy and bit of the punk-rock approach. Usually this would not be my sort of thing - but I liked this album.
