Brazilbeat Sound System: Nova

Damn, someone beat me to releasing a NZ produced baile funk track, and they even managed to restrain themselves from using the Tamborzao percussion break! BrazilBeat Sound System is what happens when a multi-instrumentalist from Brazil teams up with a DJ from San Francisco. Now Gisborne-based and having played shows all over the place, they ended up roping in local house godfather Soane as executive producer for this debut album. ‘Nova’ is a full spectrum roots dance music album underpinned and driven by the infectious percussion of Nego Beto and DJ Mara’s thunderous basslines. Styles covered on this Belezza Records’ release include house, baile funk, samba-reggae, bossa nova, drum ‘n’ bass and more - you know, that endless summer business. Despite my excitement at the inclusion of a baile funk song, I feel a certain level of disappointment at the vocal performances on this release. The press attached mentioned that BBSS are the kind of act you have to see live to get what everyone is on about. I have a feeling this remains true to a large extent.Related Information
