Lil' Ian Goodsman: Out Of The Blue (Apollodorus Music)

A collection of blues standards from bluesman Lil' Ian Goodsman. Very crisp sounding and played with masterful integrity and skill. For me perhaps a lil' too crisp and skilful in production though. With songs from the likes of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and Big Bill Broonzy one would except a lil' grits. No grits here. A sampled, scratchy ol' gramophone laced through the entire album and a little distortion could have gone a long way in my humble opinion. You can't please em' all or so I've heard, and I must say I was less than pleased with this one. I'm told that Goodsman is a staple of both local and international folk/blues festivals and is a regular at Auckland's Java-Jive so I imagine that this man's talent shines a lot more in person than it seems to on disc.
