Norman Meehan: Modigliani
By Tony Parker
Pianist Meehan is a bit of a jazz scholar having studied here and overseas and has a compositional style that shows the influence of jazz greats such as John Scofield and Ornette Coleman. ‘Modigliani’ features six original compositions performed by Meehan and three of Wellington’s finest jazz musicians including Odessa guitarist Daniel Ryland, bassist Nick Tipping and drummer Reuben Bradley and together they interact with an empathy and looseness that serves these compositions well. There is great interplay especially between Meehan and Ryland and all four musicians work well together as they get to expand and improvise on the main musical themes with skill and finesse. This is a classy jazz album where the ensemble playing and melodic exploration creates just the right vibe.
