The False Dmitrys: Gluttons For Punishment
By Ania Glowacz
Not for the fainthearted, comes the (unbelievably) fifth release from The False Dmitrys. Whilst I can’t vouch for the other releases, I can’t vouch very much for this one either, it’s hardly easy listening. There’s humour, witticisms, noise, strange embellishments and sonic gunge espoused in an appropriately lo-fi fashion. There’s no pretense of ‘singing’ or anything like that. Flight Of The Conchords this is not, being far more underground and will require some patience. It’s similar to maybe Wendyhouse but maybe not as good. Those responsible are Brent Willis from Wellington and Heath Neilson from Nelson, with the help of some collaborators. The theme is largely sex and stupidity, some of it funny and listenable, and then some of it not. Tracks include Cockroach In A Sugarbag, Groom Of The Stool and There’s No Business Like Show Business Except Maybe Ho Business. Could possibly be called eclectic, though mainly wilfully obscure. Title says it all - enter at your own risk.
