The Keeper Project: Vs2.2

By Alistair Wickens
The Keeper Project is Auckland multi-instrumentalist and producer Paul Rael. After a finger injury hampered his career as a guitarist he re-schooled as an audio engineer and producer, teaching himself to program other instruments along the way and recording in his home studio. ‘Vs2.2’ is his third such album though I haven’t heard the previous two (‘Vs1’ and ‘Vs2’) so have no idea how they stack up against this one. What I do know is that Mr. Rael is a talented musician and producer - this disc sounds slick - but at the end of the listen what it almost inevitably sounds like is one guy jamming over programmed backing tracks. There are some nice songs on here, songs that get into a good groove (or as much of a groove as a computerised rhythm section can produce), but others seem unfinished and really don’t go anywhere. It is a good album despite this criticism and I hope it does well, although I have a feeling it’s going to appeal most to a small audience of slide guitar fanatics and audio engineering enthusiasts.
