Lucid 3: Running Down The Keys
By Tony Parker
With her warm floating vocals and a preference for stream of consciousness lyrical wordplay Victoria Girling-Butcher could quite easily be lumped in with any number of female singers from the last 10 years. What sets her apart is the company she keeps in the form of the other Lucid 3 band members, bassist/guitarist Marcus Lawson and drummer/producer Derek Metivier. Together the three create a rock/trip hop alliance that can be quite organic with acoustic guitars and vintage keyboards featuring strongly, yet their samples and loops combined with Girling-Butcher's vocals can take on a Portishead/Massive Attack vibe. Recorded by Metivier in his home studio the album is of a quality usually associated with 'bigger budget' recordings but still maintains an intimacy reflecting its 'lo-fi' origins. If all this sounds a little schizophrenic then rest assured that that's not the case as 'Running Down The Keys' proves to be a seamless and self assured debut.
