Brick vs Face: Think For Yourself
By Alistair Wickens
Auckland hardcore threesome Brick vs Face have packed a lot into their four year life - producing zines and DVDs documenting the NZ hardcore scene, putting on shows with local bands, as well as supporting big names such as Bad Religion, Sick of it All and Comeback Kid. It’s not hard to hear why these guys get picked to play for visiting acts - this album is full of power, passion and aggression. The lyrics aren’t anything special but convey the philosophy of the band well, reminding me more than a little of the later Dead Kennedys’ stuff (particularly second track Think!). Expect the production to be raw on this recording, but that’s just fine - it adds to the feel and hardcore that’s over-produced can sound as though it’s lacking the soul of the music. The only complaint I have is one which applies to a lot of good hardcore albums, that the tracks are a bit too short and there’s not enough of them.
